Cork Schools Heritage Project 2010

We had a visit from Kieran McCarthy, a local historian, on Friday last November 26th. He came to help us with our project on The Bridges of the River Lee. There are thirty bridges in total but as a class we will focus on about ten of the more prominent ones such as North and South Gate Bridge, Patrick's Bridge etc. Over the Christmas holidays I will be asking the children to visit some bridges in the city centre and answer some simple questions about them. As part of their fieldwork, sketches and photos would also be very useful. Thanks for your support in this.

School Council

Well done to Lucy O'Brien who is our class representative on the Scoil Nioclais School Council.

Art Attack!

We examned a painting by Edward Munch called The Scream. We re-created it using charcoal which was a bit messy but lots of fun! Here are some of our pictures.

A Spooky Story by Rebecca Kennan

I got an eerie feeling as I approached the haunted house. I turned the rusty, old key in the door and nervously pushed it open. As I entered the house the door shut suddenly behind me. There were cobwebs everywhere. I screamed when I saw a huge spider on the wall. There was a musty smell. It was dark and damp. A huge staircase loomed before me. I started to climb.
Dim lights spanned the stairway walls flickering on and off constsntly. As I neared the top of the stairs the last few steps creaked very loudly. I pushed open a big dark heavy door and when I got in I jumped because two big fat rats scampered across the creaking floor boards. In one corner of the room there was a big cauldron held over a huge fire with steam rising from it. There was obviously something being cooked in it, and I didn't care what! Thinking fast, I backed out of the room and just as I was doing so I bumped into something solid. It was a witch!! She stared at me with a big toothless grin and said, '' Lovely, you're just the perfect little girl to spice up my brew''. I screamed with fright and as I ran blindly to the door I accidently knocked her over. I stopped to look back quickly and she had landed in her own cauldron. I think she found the spice she needed!

As a continuation of our studies of The Romans and Italy, we looked at the work of some Italian artists. We really liked this painting by Leonardo Da Vinci.

A Roman Story

My name is Marius. I am a Roman soldier. Let me tell you about my life. When I joined, I took an oath for 25 years or until I die. I will never marry or see my homeland again.

My life is dangerous and exciting at the same time. I walk 30km a day with my kit. I carry an axe, a saw, food, a rope and camping gear inside. I wear armour and have weapons such as my sword, my dagger, my javelin and my helmet and shield for protection.

I sleep in a leather tent with seven other soldiers. I try to sleep in the middle because it is the warmest. I train everyday. It can be a bloody affair, even if we cover up the tips of our swords and daggers!. I also feed animals and collect wood and water. I clean my weapons too. The army builds roads and forts. We are a strong army. We invade other countries to get land taxes and slaves. When I retire, the Emperor of Rome will reward my hard work with a small farm and maybe some animals.

Easter Egg Hunt

The School Council decided to organize an Easter Egg Hunt for the junior and senior infant classes. As this would involve 270 children, the council enlisted the help of Miss O’Brien’s fourth class for the event.

Having cleaned out some local shops of Easter treats, the council members dressed up in animal costumes. The little children were delighted to be escorted around the school grounds on the day by a senior class. They had to complete simple tasks involving hula hoops, skipping ropes, bean bags etc. For each task completed the children won a letter. When six letters spelling E-A-S-T-E-R were collected, the children received an Easter goodie bag.

Poetry Corner

What is Black?

Black is the colour of dullness,
And the smoke from a steam express.
It’s the burnt on your toast and
funeral coats.
It’s the colour of space and a fireplace,
And coal plus a mole.
An empty mind and passing time.
Death and before a couple met.
The tyre on your car and a loved one afar.
Ink and when you blink is black.
The violence of war and some
clothes that have tore.
Black is like a train track.
And, at the end of your life when you fall into
a…. BIG BLACK HOLE.

Aoife Corkery

WHAT IS RED?

ROSY RED CHEEKS
BLOOD THAT LEAKS
THE PLANET MARS
NASTY SCARS
RED HOT STARS
BURNING FIRE
A RED ROBIN ON A WIRE
AN ANGRY DEVIL
A RED HOT PEBBLE
THE CORK FLAG
A NEW RED BAG
THE COLOUR OF MAN-U
I LIKE IT, YES I REALLY DO.

BY MAEVE O HALLORAN

WHAT IS BROWN?

BROWN IS THE COLOUR OF MY HAIR
DOWN IS THE WAY I LIKE TO WEAR
I REALLY LIKE TO EAT CHOCOLATE BARS
BROWN AND GOOEY LIKE A MARS
BROWN IS THE COLOUR OF THE FENCE OUT MY BACK
I GET MY FOOTBALL AND GIVE IT A WHACK
MY DOG HAS BROWN AND WHITE SPOTS
I LOVE HIM LOTS AND LOTS
SO BROWN IS MY FAVOURITE COLOUR IN THE WORLD
MMMMM THAT MAKES ME THINK ABOUT CHOCOLATE TWIRLS!

Carrissa Ryan

WHAT IS GREEN ?

GREEN IS THE COLOUR OF LIFE
IT’S WHAT MAKES ME FEEL ALIVE
CRICKETS, GRASSHOPPERS AND DRAGONS
ALL SO SPECIAL
ALL SO GREEN
EVERYDAY THEY NEED TO BE SEEN
LIMES AND SLIMES
OH SO GREEN
APPLES, GRASS AND PLANTS
MAKES ME WANT TO DANCE
GREEN, GREEN, GREEN
PEACFUL, PLEASANT AND CALM.

Children's Poetry.

Salvar
My Salvar is blue , and has golden swirls.
It comes with a cap that has twirls.
I wear it when it is sunny.
And then , I am as warm as a bunny.
It feels like I am warm, and I like the style.
Just the colour of River Nile.
When I wear it I feel like I am the best.
I wonder if it will help me pass my test.
Shayan Khan

My Hoody

My hoody is in my wardrobe waiting just for me
It makes me look like a baby bear because it’s brown and furry
I wear it when it cold outside and it keeps me warm and snug
It is very soft and comfortable, just like it's giving me a hug!
Jamie Connell

MY TRACKSUIT
I like my tracksuit
I think it looks just fine
My mom bought it for me
I can’t believe its mine
It comes in many colours
Mine is grey and white
And when I get it dirty
It gives my mom a fright.
Cian Dillon

My Pyjamas
Pyjamas is what I like to wear
If I look weird I don’t care
Because I feel like a fuzzy bear
I’D WEAR MY PYJAMAS EVERYWHERE
Aoife Kelleher

My Hoody
My hoody is so cool, it’s too cool for school.
The chicks like my style they see me coming from a mile!
It shines to the sun and it makes me have fun.
I love my hoody!
Kevin Lee

MAN U JERSEY
I love my jersey very much.
Because it’s so nice to touch.
It’s red and black and looks really cool.
I wish I could wear it going to school.
When I wear it lots of goals I score.
I score so many sometimes, 24 or more.
Someday I would like to play for MAN U.
If you wear the jersey you could play too.

The First Australians

Native peoples lived in Australia long before British settlers arrived. They are known as Aborigines.

Aborigines hunted wild animals and gathered wild plants for food. They practiced “firestick farming.” They burned dry grass so that new grass would grow back. Then they hunted the animals that came to eat the fresh grass.

Aborigines used a famous hunting weapon called the boomerang. A boomerang is a curved, flat piece of wood that spins when thrown. Aborigines also painted beautiful designs on rocks and bark, made music, and told stories. They played a unique musical instrument called the didjeridu. It’s a long, decorated horn made from a tree branch hollowed out by termites.

British settlers caused great hardships for the Aborigines. Many Aborigines died fighting the settlers. Many more were killed by diseases brought from Europe. Today, few Aborigines maintain their traditional way of life. Most live in cities and towns.
