Port of Cork Project 2009

The children of fifth class entered the Port of Cork Project 2009. The project was entitled Immigration and Emigration from the Port of Cork. We examined the arrival of the Vikings and visited the location of Viking settlements in Cork City. We also researched the arrival of the Huguenots from France. We visited Carey’s Lane and French Church Street, as well as the newly developed Huguenot graveyard in our city. We also studied the arrival of Jews in Cork City. We made another visit to the area of Albert Road, affectionately known as Jew Town and we played in Shalom Park!! Finally, in terms of emigration we studied the mass exodus of people from Cobh during the Famine. Those lucky enough to make it on-board were forced to endure open seas often in unsafe vessels that were originally built for transporting cargo. We visited Cobh Heritage Centre to learn more. Enjoy the photo diary of our Port of Cork Project 2009. Our class will be enjoying a boat trip around Cork harbour on June 8th. We can't wait!
